Our Story
In early 1973, an idealistic couple left their normal life in the United States and headed to Honduras. They traded their 1953 Chevy pickup for 40 acres of land and set up a homestead in the mountains near the village of Socorro de Las Penitas. They learned the language, how to survive without grocery stores, and adapted gardening to tropical climate plants. Their children were born on the property in Honduras.
Over time, they developed close relationships with their neighbors and became as close as family. They noticed that the land around them needed to be managed to preserve the variety of trees and birds. They decided to plant coffee under the trees to use the canopy for shade-grown coffee. This practice saved many acres from slash-and-burn practices.
The protected properties became known as Rancho Los Amigos. Today, along with their close friend David Lopez, they manage the homestead and adjacent properties. They grow high-altitude coffee called arabica at the perfect altitude of 1500 to 1800 feet. The varieties grown include Catuai, lempira, parainema, paca, pacamara, and Incafe noventa.
Rancho Los Amigos coffee is sold at several coffee roasters, including St. Frank in San Francisco, Modern Times in San Diego, and Fire Creek in Phoenix. For the last several years, Linda has been roasting small batches for farmers' markets, family, and friends. They are now looking forward to offering this single-origin, artisanally roasted coffee to a wider market.
